Many locals are often asked “What’s the best beach Oahu?”

The responses will vary from person to person depending on what kind of beach you are looking for and often what you plan to do at the beach. If you want a beach to just hang out, catch some sun, and swim in water that has no waves that’s very safe, then Ala Moana beach park (in my opinion) would be a great place to start. As long as you get there early, you can easily find parking and the water is calm and a lot of fun to swim in.

To get some fun and mild “wave action” to play in, Waikiki may be a better place, BUT trying to find free parking stinks unless you don’t mind walking a few blocks to get there. The other place to go where the beach is a lot more “natural”, parking is free, and the waves are safe and fun would be to go to the windward side of the island to Kailua Beach Park or Waimanalo Beach Park. These 2 are considered by many as the “Best” beaches to go to. They’re a lot less crowded (usually) during the week and parking is ample if you go early enough on the weekend. Also, they have lifeguards, public showers to rinse off, and restrooms as well. Its also a really nice place to walk along sandy shoreline and get not feel like your going to step on someone.

Tell us where you’ve been or suggest beaches of your own!

So where are the safest beaches for amateurs to catch some waves (with or without a board) that everyone in the whole family can enjoy? For non-surfers that still want the thrill of a wave ride, I have to say that Waimanalo Beach park again is a top choice of mine personally. Kailua Beach is pretty decent as well, and some beaches on the Waianae coast will do well too. Waimanalo has a unique beach that is sandy and allows you to walk quite a distance to stand and wait for a wave to catch. This means you can push off the sand for a little momentum that helps get you going and also gives a nice ride all the way to shore. Depending on the time of year, most conditions are mild enough for little ones (who are supervised) to have a blast on the shore as well.

Windy days can bring in a lot of portugese man-o-war, so check the shore for these little buggers first. If its littered with them, it may not be recommended that you enter the water that day.

What are your thoughts on decent beaches for amateurs on Oahu?

Some visitors to the island look for “rockless” beaches. My personal favorite is Waimanalo Beach Park for a beach with so much sand it sometimes seems endless. I like the fact that you can walk a long way out from shore and not have to worry about any rocks below you.

Here is a panoramic stitch photo that I took when I went there.

(The best way to look at this picture is to click on it and zoom in. Then scroll the image from side to side as if you are turning your head)

My second recommendation for a rockless beach would be Kailua Beach Park.

Both of these can be found on the “Oahu Beaches” page with map link locations.

I’ve been asked many times as to what my favorite beach was? I have to say that I LOVE Waimanalo Beach park as one of the best beaches on the island. You got a very long coastline and soft white sand almost all to yourself on most weekdays. The water is shallow for a long way out, so you can literally walk to where the waves break and catch a nice long ride to shore without worrying about reef. Check out the Beach page to see other great recommendations.

Let us know if you agree! Please tell us what beaches on Oahu you think rate well. Also, be on the lookout for video postings of all the top beaches. I’ve recently gone to most of the best beaches around the island and took videos of what you can expect. I’ve also only seen white sand beaches on the island of Oahu and been to an authentic “Black Sand Beach” on the Big Island of Hawaii. Does anyone know any beaches on Oahu that have non-white sand on the shore?

Looking for something to do on Oahu? Oahu has some of the nicest beaches in the world and I am not talking about Waikiki. There is so much more to the island that so many don’t get a chance to see. I grew up on Oahu and had no idea myself, some of the beaches I had been missing out on until I started this project and went out to film various beaches throughout the island.

There are so many great things to see and do on Oahu. I hope that you will help to contribute to this site to help others find awesome places that others should know about!
